Sensory Garden
We have developed our school garden over the last 5 years. Parents, teachers and children have been very involved in the garden development during this period. Many volunteered their time and skills to help develop our raised beds for all the classes to develop.
Local parent and horticulturalist Stephen O’ Shea has been very generous with his time to help us with our school garden.
Each class has been assigned a raised bed and they will plant seeds in the 8 raised beds using the B.A.S.L. crop rotation system.
Each year our classes plant a variety of vegetables and flowers. Each class is responsible for their raised beds and look after watering, feeding and weeding. We receive great assistance from our caretaker, Tommy with maintenance of the school garden.
We have also planted a fruit garden in 2019 and have planted a variety of apple, pear and plum trees. We plan to add further to our school garden in the coming years.
Crop Rotation
Stephen explained the importance of crop rotation to us as well as teaching us how to take care of the garden effectively. He brought us out to weed the garden beds. He told us that we also have to fertilise the garden. We used organic fertiliser and then planted our seeds.
